A Kingston room opened up to the roof: a new vaulted ceiling with three Velux windows, fully insulated and plastered, ready for decoration.
A homeowner in Kingston upon Thames wanted more light and height in a living space. We took out the existing ceiling, formed a new vaulted ceiling that follows the roof, and fitted three Velux roof windows into the slope.
The work began with taking down the existing flat ceiling. That opened the room up to the roof structure and gave us room to form the new vaulted ceiling, with the roof slope now part of the room.
With the structure prepared, we fitted three Velux windows, set into the roofline in a row so the daylight spreads along the room rather than gathering in one spot.
The new ceiling was then insulated and boarded, following the slope of the roof and returning neatly into the reveals around each window.
To finish, the whole ceiling was plastered, leaving it ready for decoration and its new light fittings. The room now runs up into the roof, with three windows of sky overhead.
Thinking of vaulting a ceiling? See our Velux pitched roof windows or ask about flat glass skylights for a flat roof.
Yes, and it is the best time to do it. With the old flat ceiling gone, the roof slope is open from inside, so the openings can be cut and trimmed between the rafters before the new ceiling is insulated and boarded around them.
Usually, yes. Taking out a flat ceiling can remove the ties that stop a roof spreading, so the new structure is normally designed by a structural engineer and checked by building control. The insulation in the new ceiling has to meet the regulations too.
The insulation follows the roof slope, fitted between and often under the rafters, then boarded and plastered. Done properly, the room stays warm in winter even though the ceiling now runs up to the roof.
Daylight and fresh air through a sloping roof: manual, electric and solar-powered Velux windows for lofts, vaulted ceilings and extensions.
