Sun tunnels, supplied and fitted

A sun tunnel collects daylight through a small dome on the roof and carries it down a highly reflective tube to a diffuser in the ceiling, which spreads it through the room. It brings real daylight to places a skylight cannot reach: landings, bathrooms, hallways, stairwells and walk-in wardrobes. How a sun tunnel works

• The dome on the roof gathers light from the sky, with a flashing to suit tiles, slates or a flat roof.
• The tube carries the light down. Rigid tubes have a mirror finish and give the most light, especially over longer runs. Flexible tubes bend around obstacles in the loft on shorter runs.
• The diffuser in the ceiling spreads the light evenly, and looks like a flush ceiling light.

Most sun tunnels fit between the rafters, so the roof structure does not need cutting the way it does for a full-size window.

Where a sun tunnel works best

A sun tunnel is the answer when the room you want to light is not directly under the roof slope, or there is no space for a window. A landing in the middle of the house, a bathroom with no window, or a hallway two floors down can all have daylight of their own. Where there is room for a window, a Velux pitched roof window or a flat glass skylight brings in more light and a view of the sky.

How we fit a sun tunnel

1. We find the best route from the roof to the ceiling, keeping the tube as short and straight as possible.
2. A neat hole is cut in the ceiling for the diffuser.
3. The dome and its flashing go on the roof, weathered into the tiles, slates or roof covering.
4. The tube is fitted between the two and sealed at both ends.
5. The diffuser is fitted flush to the ceiling.
