Guildford, Surrey
Guildford is about 17 miles south west of our base in Surbiton. Our job here put a new loft window into an old clay tiled roof, opening sideways for access to the main roof.
This Guildford home has an old plain clay tiled roof, with a lead gutter between two of its slopes. We stripped the tiles back, fitted a new loft window at the head of the gutter and relaid the tiles around it. The window opens sideways, giving a clear way out from the loft onto the main roof.
Guildford has homes of every age, from timber framed cottages near the old town to Victorian terraces and the suburbs that spread out along the valley of the River Wey. Many have plain clay tiled roofs, which take roof windows well when the tiles are cut and relaid around the flashing. Rear extensions with flat roofs are common too, and a flat glass rooflight or roof lantern lights the back of the room.
Guildford Borough Council is the planning authority. A new opening in the roof usually needs building regulations approval, and we will tell you what your job needs when we come to see it.
